The Research Essay – The Presidency, then and now
Over the time of American History, the power and influence of the American presidency has matured and expanded exponentially. As we have identified in class, specific events, and certain presidents have contributed to this evolution. The presidents also have employed three major perspectives for wielding executive power. Now I want to explain in detail this expansion; what are three major wield powers they have and explain them in detail.
The Constitution of the United States of America is a brief document outlining the boundaries of the American government. It also separates the power of the government into three branches: the legislative branch, the executive branch and the judicial branch.

Beside those official roles, there are another two important roles which are Chief symbol, a model for American, and Defender of the Constitution, the protector of the constitution by taking the Oath. Besides the Executive powers defined in Article II of the Constitution, the President and the Executive branch also have the expanded power, which is the Inherent power. In Re Neagle was an example for the expansion power, the Inherent power was exercised. In the In Re Neagle case, Marshal Neagle was arrested and judged as the killer, while he tried to protect the judge from the murder. So Neagle decided to appeal his case to the highest court. The Supreme Court considered the Neagle case based on the Constitution. They decided that Neagle as the marshal he belonged to the U.S. Army and Navy, he had responsibility to “protect and serve” other people. As for the clear example for Literalist, there are presidents Taft and Coolidge. They are restricted by the Constitution. They followed direction of the Constitution word by word even the Constitution was just a brief document. They are not the policy makers; they just approve or reject Congress. Coolidge was known as a silent cow because he did not have any media discussions. Therefore, his image was easy to forget. Teddy Roosevelt in his first term was the clear example as a Stewardship president. This kind of president is the person, who considers Constitution as a guidebook, but he or she does difference by his or her own way. They usually violate the power of Supreme Court. Teddy was a New York police and Navy man. With his ambition, he sent the U.S. Navy ship to parts of the world and challenged with Spanish Armada. His purpose was clear but he did not order to attack. The Supreme Court warned if his policy continued, they would cut funding to Navy. The situation became more stressful, so the legislation supported the U.S. Navy. But if there was a war, Teddy would be accused. At the end, nothing happened. It showed Stewardship president does not respect Constitution and also the Supreme Court.
