In The lesson, an African American teacher, Mrs. Moore, who teaches very low income students, decides to take them to the rich side of the town to visit the famous toys store F.A.O. Schwartz:A major icon for capitalism and indulgence in todays society She does this to give the kids something they’re not used to seeing everyday, where they come from, the projects, is nothing compared to this place. Upon seeing the prices of what the toys cost , the children are in shock. The amount of money for one toy at this store could easily feed a family of 6 in the projects. The children think “white people are crazy” for spending so much money on toys for their kids when they probably don’t even know what they are used for. Edie doesn’t know how to react to the pilots compliment because she’s never got them and doesn’t think people see her as an adult. “I wasn’t even old enough then to realize how out of the common it is, for a man to say something like that to a woman, or somebody he is treating like a woman.”(51) The fact that chris has seen her as an adult since the first time he saw her doesn’t click in her head unit she is old enough to understand the meaning of his comments , like, “Is a good thing I am used to shy ladies”(52) and when he told Ms. Peebles that “he couldn’t settle down to ordinary life”(55) .
