The Price of Indifference In the 1940’s in East Europe there was a series of horrible events against the Jewish Community. They were sent to camps where they were worked to death and killed just because.This was a widespread event because of indifference and the fact that nobody spoke up about the crimes. For any readers who aren’t aware, Indifference is the lack of knowledge or care about one's suffering or situation. As shown in history, indifference can be a cause of horrific crimes against minorities. The Jewish people were aware of the Nazi occupation of eastern Europe but since they didn’t directly come at or harm them at first nobody thought it was a big deal. This is especially the case when the rules that harm other better the lives of the majority population. The German soldiers and locals that lived in and around the concentration camps paid no attention to to any suffering. Some of them even made the suffering worse by their choice because they did not like a certain person. In the novella Night by Elie Weisel on page 19 a Hungarian police officer says “ Faster, faster you lazy good for nothing’s!” The world does not care about the suffering of theof the Jews. The Hungarian police could have helped the Jews escape or at the very least give them better treatment then they would experience at auschwitz. The world around east Europe did nothing about the horrifying actions at the concentration camps. The rest of the world did not know and did not look for any camps like this even though they knew Hiter persecuted Jews. “Let them learn of the existence of Auschwitz. Let everybody find out about it while we still have a chance to escape.”(page 20 of night by Elie Weisel) This shows that the world didn’t know or want to know about auschwitz. The people in the camp are praying to god that people find out about the camp and rescue them. The whole world had no idea about the action in the camp and the indifference of the locals and soldiers working in the
