Joe Rantz’s character arc helps him develop over the course of The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Towards the beginning of the book, Joe is very independent and goal oriented. In the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, Grant is a main character that has a lot of influence over the people in his community. Some might even consider him a hero. I believe that Grant is a hero because he helps Jefferson become a man, changes himself for the better, and wants to continue changing the community. Over the course of the novel, Grant helps Jefferson become the man that he needs to be in order to walk to his death with honor. When Grant first begrudgingly went to visit Jefferson in prison Jefferson was in a really low state.
Montag was almost finished with the last library. In Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, the shoemaker, aliased as the Shoe Poet, captivates the reader by modeling a considerable amount of bravery during his journey to escape Russian attacks in World War II. The shoemaker witnesses the horrors of both world wars, but he somehow manages to keep life in perspective. Not only does he keep high spirits, but the Shoe Poet also is extremely selfless and cares for everyone in the group escaping the Russians, especially the child, Klaus. Despite war, the shoemaker manages to provide a cheerful vibe and selflessness to his group, which gives him a sense of bravery.
The quotes from Jack Thayer helped me feel the intensity and emotion of the story “Into the Dark Water” By Lauren Tarshis. In this story, Jack Thayer a 17 year boy stuck fighting for his life on the Titanic. As it sank he lost his parents and all he had was his friend. There was quotes from him that kept you reading. It felt like you were there and what it was like to go through tragedy.
In the story “By the Waters of Babylon” the author revolves around the destruction of human civilization caused by World War II. Stephen Benet shows you the possible threats and dangers of war destruction, which comes to the theme of the story: the outcome and dangers of war. The readers learn in the story that this is long after human inhabitation and humans could be considered as “Gods” during this point in time. Whilst John (the main character of the story) is going east, where he is forbidden to go he enters a place, long ridden of the gods, which we know as New York City. In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.
