Prognosis of Chris Kyle
If it had not been for his untimely death, Kyle might have had an optimal prognosis. This is because he showed promising changes in his symptomology after starting Shooting Therapy. However, many physiological medical conditions can arise due to trauma related mental disorders. PTSD can lead to tissue damage and coronary heart disease (Sue, Sue, & Sue, 2016). Chris Kyle already displayed signs of hypertension, or high blood pressure, and this can lead to other cardiovascular health problems such as aneurysms, myocardial infarction, mitral valve prolapse, and congestive heart failure (Sue, Sue, & Sue, 2016). Since the movie was based off the autobiography written by Chris Kyle about his life during and after his time serving overseas in Iraq, it stays true to the book and the real life events that happened to him. It allows for the audience to see all of the symptomology that he is experiencing, which meet the criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD according to the DSM-5. It shows the real life struggles he undergoes as well as how the prolonged exposure therapy helped him. While the movie sends a positive message about receiving treatment for mental illnesses, the death of Kyle is horrifying and saddening. Eddie Routh was a veteran who did not receive the appropriate treatment for his mental health disorder, and ultimately killed Kyle (Cooper & Eastwood, 2014). This film accurately depicts an important issue among veterans with PTSD, in that many United States veterans do not receive the mental health care that they need once they return from war. All veterans receive treatment for their physical injuries, but few receive treatment for psychological injuries following traumatic experiences. There is sometimes a cultural stigma that veterans who are not physically injured on the battlefield are okay, but this is not always the case.
