Every game has rules that if broken, can penalize the player for doing so. Even the NFL, which is an extreme contact sport, has its own rule book that players must abide by on the field. However, in all of the action it is very easy for a player to lose his focus and commit a personal foul. During the 2016 offseason, the NFL has implemented a new rule change that says any player who commits two personal fouls gets ejected automatically. This new rule can impact the game negatively by how easily a player can get two fouls, severely putting a team at a disadvantage if their star player is ejected, and how it gives the referees too much power. There are two kinds of personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness. Unnecessary roughness includes a helmet-to-helmet hit, roughing the passer, and pass interference. Football is a fast paced game that includes a tremendous amount of physical contact. There are not many players in the NFL who can avoid a foul every single play; certain positions, for example a defensive lineman, are at a disadvantage because they endure contact every play and are more susceptible to a foul because they have more chances at one. For example, a sack is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback before the quarterback throws the ball; this is a huge play in football and, if properly executed, can give a momentum boost for the defense. However, if a player goes for the sack and ends up tackling the quarterback right after the quarterback gets rid of the ball, that can be called for roughing the passer even if the ball was released within a second. A player receiving this foul while having the rule where one can be ejected from the game due to two personal fouls can be detrimental to the game’s action.
