Another symbol of a totalitarian regime is the influence of the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin. Unlike Hitler, Stalin came to power by having blackmailed many of the communistic leaders in the government, and he had eventually murdered his primary rival Leon Trotsky. However, Stalin was similar to that of Hitler's rule when he (Stalin) had also allowed the state to strictly control and limit its peoples' knowledge on certain things such as education. Moreover, if citizens spoke against Stalin or about the government, they too were sent to gulags (Soviet work camps). It has been told that "He (Stalin) took on the nickname 'Uncle Joe' in an effort to give off a kind and friendly personality" (Cote). In actuality, he ran a country in which he …show more content…

It has been indicated that a dictatorship is capable of establishing a very strong government. Since there is no opposition, anything the state demands, can be achieved very quickly, without going through the chaotic hassle of going back- and- forth. It is understandable why some believe that these regimes tend to carefully position competent people in vital positions to make the execution of a policy even more efficient.
