Over 61,000 dogs suffer in U.S laboratories every year. More than 21,000 cats are forced to endure painful experiments in U.S laboratories anually. Animals have been used repeatedly for scientific research throughout history. However, not all animal studies have been successful when humans were involved. Animal testing torments many innocent creatures for unreliable and costly research that is not necessary.
In the medical science world, scientists have many ways to find cures for diseases or to figure out if one product is safe for the general public. Animal experimentation, the most common method, is a very inhumane way of testing out certain experiments. In some labs, scientists try and compensate the animals by giving them sort of treatment after experiments. Surprisingly some scientists fail to realize that common primates used in testing have the same sensitivity as humans, they might aswell be testing on humans. Jeory, the author of the article, quotes Dr. Goodall saying; “I can state categorically that they have a similar capacity for suffering, both mental and physical, and show similar emotions to many of ours”.
Their life inside the laboratories is like living in prison, feeling lonely. The animal welfare campaigns are trying to prevent these inhuman treatments through their attacks and seminars that they make every year. Furthermore, the replacement of animals in these tests is available. Variations of alternative methods can be replaced the animal’s place
Animal testing goes as far back to greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) and Erasistratus (304 – 258 BC). Whom once performed testing on animals to advance behavior of something or who aspired to alter brain activity. However there was scientists such as Galen (129 – 199 / 217 AD), who used animals in order to attempt to improve various human activity within the body. Specifically focusing on cures and treatment for those who don't have them. Later, Ibn Zuhr began to use animal testing to benefit humans in which he would perform surgeries on them to ensure that the procedures would not harm humans.
As a small beagle puppy named Sophie wakes up to burning sensations, needles, and relentless torture, she can’t help but cry out. Sophie happens to be an animal used for chemical research. Everyday she is attacked by test that only leave fatal results and excruciating pain. Sophie is just one of the many animals plagued by experimental testing through out the world.
Testing, experimenting, assessing, and scrutinizing are apart of the procedures that harmless animals are put through every day in order to benefit the human life. What makes torturing animals with chemicals considered a good thing? Animals involved in testing include: rats, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs. Imagine a household pet, such as a cat or dog, being put against their will placed in chemicals with no good reasoning? Whether or not you’re human, living creature still deserve to be treated respectfully and fairly, and based on the percentages and experiments being placed on animals; there is no respect or fairness given.
Humans are the superior species, but this doesn’t imply that we shouldn’t possess a moral mindset when it comes to animal testing. Animal testing is the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, especially for purposes of determining the safety of substances such as foods, drugs, and human luxuries (e.g. cosmetics, facial cleansers, perfumes, adhesives, etc.). Considering the previous, we can conclude everyone has consumed and/or used a product verified by the FDA from the result of animal testing. While society may consider animal testing inhumane, it is necessary for medical breakthroughs.
When I first starting doing my research relating to animal testing, I realize that there were various methods in the scientific world that could be used in this type of experimental phase such as (Alternatives to Animal Testing, 2016): organ-on-chip which are used to mimic the structure along with function of the human systems in the body, cell based test and tissue models which can be used for testing consumer products and etc. The factors concerning and dealing with animals testing has been a part of society threshold of experimental concepts for years even though people have their pros and con’s about its cruel and expensive funding ritual of doing these type of test. There are also many other non-animal systems of testing which have
Animal testing, sometimes called vivo testing or animal experiment, is the use of non-human animals in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study. They are widely conducted in labs, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry. Animal testing is mainly used for testing, breeding, defense research, and toxicology, including cosmetics testing. Those experiments are mainly risky for animals, sometimes even kill testing subjects, which caused protest from some organizations like WAP (World Animal Protection). In 2012, one of the biggest animal farm for Animal testing called Green Hill was closed under stress of
On a national level, animal testing and abuse is very common. Animals are just like every other living thing whether they look like us or not. They have feelings, organ systems, and ways to communicate with their kind. These animals can feel all the tests they are put through no matter if these tests are for medicinal purposes or cosmetic purposes. It is estimated that 25 million animals are used for testing and research per year.
Americans love their pets. About seven out of ten households own at least one animal, with dogs and cats the being most common, followed by fish, birds, and small mammals. It is ironic, then, how the same species we keep as pets are among the most common of animals to be tested upon. “Animal testing” is the term used for procedures done on animals for the basis of research. This research includes, but is not limited to, determining the symptoms and possible causes of diseases, assessing the potency of drugs, and determining whether or not industrial and consumer products are safe for human use (source).
implementing laws such as Australia. The very laws meant to protect the innocent lives of these animals is being treated like an option over an actual law. In addition to it being unsafe for humans and morally wrong to use animal testing, there are new discovered alternatives to animal testing. Meredith Cohn, writer of Alternatives to animal testing gaining grounds says, “ Many mainstream researchers are now more strictly adhering to a concept called the Three Rs: reduction in use of animals, refinement of the tests and replacement with new technology when possible” (Cohn 2010).
Henceforth, as animal testing increased, so did the controversy surrounding it (“Animal testing,” n.d.). Moreover, with the help of animal testing, various treatments and medicines are developed for unconventional diseases. Although animal testing may seem ruthless, animals are used for experimental research that contributes to science if there are no other possible substitutes. Animal testing is a debatable topic that still continues to be one until this time. Animal experimentation should persist because it saves human’s life from diseases, ensures cosmetics’ safety, and improves medical
“The UK consumes over 300 times more fish each year than the total number of animals used in medical research each year” people believe that animal testing is cruel, but where would we be without it? Cancer, asthma, and the flu are all common diseases between mice and us humans. People say virtual reality is an option but computers don’t know everything. Imagine if surgeries were not perfected on animals, we would have a high chance of losing our loved ones. If we want to get our cherished family members and friends out of the hospital and feeling healthy again we must let our scientists experiment on animals to find new cures, and vaccines.
1- Experimenting on animals was documented in Greek physician- scientist like Aristotle and Erasistratus. 2- Rats and mice are the most used animals for experiments. 3- Any medicine or any cosmetics are first tested on animals.
