Security guards are commonly the first line of defense and protection in dangerous situations. In the classroom, we know these security guards to be our teachers. In this essay, it shall be shown that teachers should have the option to carry a concealed weapon. This will allow students and faculty additional protection, without having to rely solely on policy. Having an armed staff will deter future intruders from entering a school. Our schools serve as havens for us to learn; unfortunately this is no longer the case. In the following paragraphs, two claims will be shown in support of arming teachers. Allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons would reduce, if not eliminate, school casualties. Teachers are the first line of defense in the classroom, giving them the ability to immediately take out a threat would be monumental. “If we look back at Sandy Hook in December of 2012, first grade teacher Victoria Soto, who was shot and killed after hiding her kids in a closet…might still be alive had she been armed and able to defend herself. Active shooters know who will be armed and who will not. Normally a teacher would not be armed, allowing the shooter several minutes of mass chaos. If we change this standard, then we can at least put the shooter in a bad position or even better eliminate their presence on campus all together. “Then there was the Pearl High School shooting in 1997, when a student killed two classmates and injured seven others at his high school.
