The Pros And Cons Of Autonomous Vehicles

765 Words4 Pages

An autonomous car is a vehicle hat is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. Typically, a human driver is required at the wheel to take control of the vehicle if, or when necessary. A variety of techniques are used to detect the vehicles surroundings. Technologies such as radars, laser lights, GPS, iodometries, and computer vision are used to successfully navigate the autonomous vehicles. Advanced control systems interpret sensory data to identify navigation paths, obstacles, and signs. Autonomous vehicles hold unlimited capabilities in their potential to be a technology that sweeps the market within transportation. Among the potential benefits of autonomous vehicles, a significant reduction in traffic collision cause by human-driver errors, will result from cars that drive themselves. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company, estimate that widespread use of autonomous vehicles could eliminate 90% of all auto accidents in the United States. This would prevent up to $190 billion in damages and health cost annually. Thousands of lives would be saved in the process, while a new business market will be introduced. Engineers have yet to find a way to produce an Artificial Intelligence, that function properly in busy inner-city environments. With the vehicles being heavily dependent on technology, the vehicles computer could potentially be compromised, limiting the system from computing proper functions. Given the pros and cons, still there remains some ethical issues that have yet to be solved. Who would be morally, financially, and criminally held responsible for crashes? Despite various opinions on who should be held liable in the case of an accident, it is favored that car manufacturers themselves be held responsible for crashes that occur due to technical malfunction. This responsibility would encourage them to establish a system that is highly sufficient and
