Are you really protecting your children when banning books? When a parent or school choose to ban a book they are inhibiting the students and their kid's ability to learn. Books are a great source for students of all ages. Banning books also go against the first amendment. And lastly, they are a bridge to the past, allowing the reader to see how authors wrote back in their time. For these reasons I do not believe books should ever be banned. For starter books are an amazing source of learning for anyone and everyone. For example “The history of children’s book publishing in America offers insight into the ways in which traditional attitudes about “appropriate” stories often end up marginalizing the lives and experiences of many young readers, rather than protecting them” (“How banning books marginalizes children”). If they cannot learn about all of history then they won’t see what went wrong and what went right. They will be just at a loss as they were in those controversial days trying to figure everything out on their own. Controversial topics need to be discussed and debated so the topic is solved and is no longer controversial.
