The issues regarding immigration at our borders are now worse than ever. The border patrol is limited on the men and resources necessary to patrol the border which makes sneaking illegal immigrants across the border all the more easier. Due to this rising problem, citizen border militias are stepping in with hopes of reducing this problem as much as possible. A border militia is a group of volunteers that help scout the unwatched border areas and report any illegal alien activity to the proper authorities. But while these volunteer border militias may have the best intentions, their actions have people questioning whether or not letting them roam freely is the best course of action. Having grown up in the southern part of my home state where this particular problem affects not only me but my entire family, I understand the severity of this issue. There have even been situations where illegal aliens have been spotted nearby my house and where we were told to watch out and report anything suspicious. While the actions …show more content…

Author Milt Priggee expresses her thoughts about this issue in her political cartoon, Figure 1, based off of the famous story A Christmas Carol. In her picture she illustrates Ebenezer Scrooge being yelled at by the ghost of his deceased business partner; which translates to the NRA being yelled at by the 2nd Amendment that a well-regulated militia does not mean any individual citizen. A specific tragedy that drew the eyes of millions of citizens, subtly brought up in the picture, was the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012, a few days before the creation of this picture. The author of this cartoon is clearly against the NRA’s position on militias and thinks that they should be under more supervision.
