In using data from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research’s Status of Women in the States, Rhodan (2015) found that wage gap differs by region. They found that in West Virginia Utah, Louisiana, North Dakota and Wyoming that wage gaps will only close 42 years after the gap is set to close for the entire US. This shows that “The nation needs to take bold, coordinated action to speed the pace of progress toward closing the wage gap and ending discrimination by sex and race” (Rhodan, 2015). Till the 1960s the South was subject to a segregated system of separate schools and public facilities and with no reparations generations have experienced differences in wages for the same jobs and skills. This is shows that is not only a national problem but also state-orientated based on historical trends in sex discrimination as well as slavery. Black women are particularly at a disadvantage because they face women’s as well as black issues. The United States has not truly progressed because in perfectly competitive labour market, individual characteristics should be rewarded the same, and they aren’t.
