Parents worry about sending their children off to college for a plethora of reasons. It is inevitable for parents to fear that their child will be exposed to things such as drugs, alcohol, sexual predators, and possibly even a more diverse environment. Something that most parents do not think of is the scenario in which a dangerous person enters the college campus packing a firearm with the intent to cause harm. Some parents choose to prepare their children to defend themselves from the factors of today’s society by arming them with pepper spray or even a taser. Likewise, several segments of society, such as law enforcement officers and elected officials, are also not always law-abiding citizens. Criminals can be found in almost every crowd, however, concealed carry license holders have fewer than most. It has been discovered that license holders are five times less likely to commit a crime than non-license holders, and concealed handgun license holders are three times less likely to get arrested than New York police officers (Students For Concealed Carry On Campus 6). Many states require CCW license applicants to complete several fingerprint and background checks. If a person does not pass these checks, then they will not qualify for a CCW license. Being granted a license in no way gives a person permission to commit a crime. As stated before, there are no metal detectors or X-ray machines on college campuses, and this is the same case for most public places. If a person desires to illegally conceal a weapon, it would not be a challenge for them to do so. However, these people will not consider committing the misdemeanor of illegally carrying a weapon.
