There were many ill effects predicted, and some of them became true, including the introduction of a new form of bullying known as cyberbullying. The following is the definition of cyberbullying according to Gale, Cengage Learning, “Cyberbullying is a form of interpersonal harassment that is conducted electronically. This electronic harassment can be carried out in many ways, using a variety of mediums. Abusive messages can be sent to a victim through text messages, instant messages, or e-mail. Cyberbullies can also attack their victims through postings on Facebook, Twitter, or other social networking websites.
Throughout my whole life, I’ve been bullied and even though at a young age around eight you still get bullied. I went to a Native American school and at that time I was a lighter color than the other students and they would call me names. I continued to go there until about fifth grade and I was continually bullied then I went to a different school, there I was hoping for a good time but I soon would discover the truth. Sixth grade wasn’t the best year of my life, but it certainly wasn’t the worst even though at my old school the Native American one I had good grades, but sixth grade my grades were dropping that started a streak that would continue for a while.
Cyberbullying is a huge problem in the United States, that happens everyday. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. It affects many people in a negative way and it has to be controlled. In order to do this, schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech because it affects people's lives and distracts everyone in a school environment. Bullying others through a screen can affect people’s lives mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Bullying is a major issue facing today’s youth. Over the course of the past few years bullying has become such a concern that many states have adopted laws against it. However, the issue evolves as time goes on and now cyber bullying exists. Cyber bullies can insult others over the internet with no need to be nearby the person they are insulting.
There have been two unfortunate suicidal cases in recent years due to cyber bullying: one victim jumped off a cement factory tower with the one shot himself in the chest. A group of Dutch researchers decided to study the relationship between the bullying and the suicides. From 34 studies that shared close resemblance to the issue, they concluded that the children that were being cyber bullied was 3.12 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts, compared to children that were had never been bullied before. One of the researchers also pointed out that annually, about five to eight percent of the US population attempts to commit
One tough thing for people is to be able to express their feelings to other people that could help. So they feel the need to go on any source of social media and post their thoughts on their account. Social Media is also another big source of bullying. Sometimes, people who use social media to express their thoughts take it to the extreme and begin to judge others in the most hateful way. I think they do this because they want everyone else to feel the way they had felt while they were being bullied.
Imagine you are a parent of a child who commits suicide because they are bullied or dumped by their boyfriend / girlfriend, or they were gay. How would you feel? This is what is happening to teenagers in our generation. Megan Meier of Missouri hanged herself at age of thirteen because she was publicly dumped by her boyfriend. Also, Ryan Halligan took his life at the age of thirteen in New Jersey after rumors spread online that he was gay and Alexis Pilkington of New York got a harassing post on Facebook; even after her suicide, the issue is continued as an example of cyberbullying on a memorial website set up by friends called Giveeverythingbutup.com.
