Is America as Democratic as they make it out to be? Do they give their citizens the freedom to vote for who they want? Since 1886 it has been a fiercely competitive battle for the top seats in the American government, with only two main political parties realistically going to win. Donald Trump and his Republicans or the Democrat Party. Put yourself in an American’s shoes, turning up to vote to have a say in democracy but the registrar won’t let you cast your vote until you tell them who you’re going to vote for. If you don’t support the party your state is in favour of, you then might not be allowed to vote at all. Can we really say that the American government is truly democratic?

However there are only two main parties in the USA- the Republicans and the Democrats, this creates a “two part system”. This means that in US elections your either going to see a Republican representing you or a Democratic. These two parties are the only two who in which are realistically can or will win elections. This does not offer the US voters much choice and because these parties are so dominant it could be argued that it is undemocratic and leads to voter apathy. There has never been an US president that has been considered an ‘independent’ and there is currently only one senator Angus king, who is not tied to the Democrat or Republican Party.
