No matter the case, every child deserves a loving home. With that being said, do you ever wonder why adoption can be such an obstacle for adoptive families? Domestic adoption has some major problems that come with it, as well as some potential solutions. As you may or may not know, domestic adoption right here in the U.S. can be a very difficult process for the adopting families and the child they are adopting. According to Hollinger, Joan and Cahn, Naomi, “The faces within adoptive families have changed dramatically while the total number of adoptions has declined from an estimated high of 170,000 to 200,000 per year during the 1960s to an estimated 130,000 to 140,000 per year in the past decades” (16). Although, domestic adoption is the best way to go when adopting considering the cost. International adoption can cost up to thousands of more dollars than domestic adoption. Also adopting through a domestic public agency is much less expensive than adopting through a domestic private agency. The average cost of adopting through a domestic public agency is about $34,093, and adopting through a domestic private agency costs about $39,966 (Adoption, Inc…). When a family is adopting, it’s also good to know just exactly what you’re paying for. Basically you would be paying for the agency fees, application costs, legal fees, birthparent expenses, etc (Adoption, Inc…). If the domestic adoption agencies would lower the costs of adoption, it would be so much more accessible for all families wanting and willing to adopt. Although, there are many ways to go about financing an adoption. Domestic adoption agencies do offer some finance support for adoptive families. They do this so the adoptive families don’t have to pay for the adoption full upfront. The finance support domestic adoption agencies offer are sliding scales, payment plans, loans, grants and even military reimbursements (Adoption, Inc...).
