In January of 2017 Donald Trump took office and since then he has caused controversy in the United States as well as around the world. Trump has been seen as an unconventional president because of the way he has been going about accomplishing his goals and the way that he uses social media and news stations to show what his intentions are. He has addressed topics such as climate change, immigration, jobs, and tax cuts. Because of his strong opinions there has been two extreme sides to each argument, the people for it and the people against it. Trump has said, “Making America Safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet” (CNN). After revising the initial travel ban that was created during the first few weeks of Trump being in office, a new version came out that restricted travel on certain foreigner’s form Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. The new restriction varies depending on the country and is meant to keep terrorists out of the United States. For example, the ban exempts most students from any travel restrictions however Syrians and North Koreans are closed off in all circumstances. Even though the ban may help some Americans feel safe or provide a time for the government to find more productive ways of dealing with terrorism and security it impacts many in a negative way. For example, researchers from several counties travel to the U.S. to attend meetings or conduct studies. According to the Washington Post, “Ever since Trump’s election, discussion of the vast divides in our nation between prosperous regions and those battered by economic change have filled our newspapers, websites and airwaves” (Washington Post). These big tax cuts that are coming may benefit some however over all may make this gap between regions larger. Tax cuts are a reduction in taxes by decreasing the income of the government and increasing the income of those whose taxes have been lowered. Trumps tax cut plan seems great because it will increase the amount of money in a worker’s pocket by keeping it from going to the government. However, not only will the cuts just benefit the top one percent and middle-class workers it will increase government debt even more. Trump is pushing for a tax cuts because he promised them and believes the economy is flourishing under his supervision, with low unemployment rates and stock market highs. The tax cuts have a potential to promote economic growth by increasing investment and spending but may not be enough to be able to pay for themselves.
