The Pros And Cons Of Fossil Fuels

995 Words4 Pages

Since 1860s James Hargreaves successfully invented a spinning jenny and opened the first industrial revolution, the demand for fossil fuels has grown dramatically. It is true that fossil fuels played an important role in the historical development of human civilization. However, the use of fossil fuels also brings a lot of harm to both our living environment and ourselves. Not wanting to be threatened, people started to develop and use other alternative energy to replace fossil fuels. Fossil fuels will fade in the future becoming history and new energy such as hydropower and nuclear energy will gradually hold advantage. Fossil fuels cause numerous negative effects whereas new energy has less harm. This essay will firstly demonstrate …show more content…

New energy includes nuclear energy and renewable energy (solar energy, water energy, geothermal energy, and other clean energy). According to Darvill.clara.net (2015), nuclear energy uses the energy made by uranium-235 nuclear fission. It is low in cost, high efficiency, and has a wide amount of resource which can last for 60,000 years under current consumption rates (Scientific American 2015). In the future, when the technology is good enough, humans can even use nuclear fusion to gain more energy and the process is safer (Hamacher and Bradshaw 2001). Renewable energy is unlimited so while using it, humans do not need to worry that it will run out one day. All of the renewable energy is more environmental friendly compared to fossil fuels. Solar energy is from the sun and solar panels are needed to transform solar energy to electric energy. Furthermore, it is free to use and users are only required to pay for installation. Unlike fossil fuels, using combustion to produce steam to operate electric generators, geothermal energy directly uses the heat in the earth to produce steam. Water energy even uses water current to operate. All these energies do not produce harmful gasses and sooty smoke unlike fossil
