The Pros And Cons Of Fracking

618 Words3 Pages

Fracking is a multi billion dollar industry. Fracking is when horizontal drilling companies shoot water mixed with chemicals into shell rock, so that the rocks expand. Then, the oil and natural gas rise up through the cracks. Sadly, there are studies against fracking, and how much damage it really does to the environment. One of the disadvantages of fracking is the increase of water pollution. In a recent study, Tim Lucas from Duke University shows, “ energy companies used nearly 250 billion gallons of water to extract unconventional shale gas and oil from fracking between 2005 and 2014 in the United States.” That amount of water could sustain three million houses for one day. Another factor which increases water pollution is the amount of wastewater that the oil rig puts out. Fracking wells put out half a barrel of wastewater for each barrel of oil produced. Wastewater is the mixture of water and chemicals that used to break the rock shell apart. In the same study, Lucas says, “from 2005 to 2014, all the fracking wells nationwide produced 210 billion gallons of wastewater.” Fracking uses more water at the beginning of …show more content…

With massive dump trucks and semi-trucks making hundreds of trips up and down the road going to the job cite. Those trucks tear up the road and make it inconvenient for residents to go through their daily routines. In a WSJ census and natural gas data they found that “at least 15.3 million Americans have a natural gas well within one mile of their home that has been drilled since 2000.” The construction of fracking wells is defiantly not slowing down soon, and one of the reasons for that is the Marcellus Shell. The Marcellus Shale is the worlds second largest natural gas find it is 400 year old rock, and contains up to 410 trillion cubic feet of shale
