Gas powered cars have been around since 1908 with the introduction of the Ford Model T, and ever since the late 1970’s the government has been putting restrictions on their manufacturing. From the invention of a catalytic converter that helps the Liquid that comes out of the tail pipe, to getting more miles per gallon out of a tank of gas by making the engine smaller, and car lighter. Modern electric cars got their start as hybrids that used an electric motor and a gas engine together to provide power, but a true electric car uses only an electric motor. The company Tesla is one of the major leading car companies utilizing this technology to help power a vehicle. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages in how they impact the environment, …show more content…
Conventional gas powered vehicles produce way more CO2 from the vehicle its self then an electric vehicle could, even on a short trip to work or the store. The gas used to power conventional cars is buried below earths surface and has to be drilled to access, which creates its own environmental impact. The gas is also a non renewable resource, and many people have seen this as an issue and looked for other sources to power the conventional car. With the introduction of ethanol mixed gas into gas stations it was a start at making the conventional car less of an environment killer, but it wasn’t a permanent solution as not every person uses E85. Some have even considered switching over to electric cars because it is less pollution from the car it’s self. While an electric car is a major step in being more environmentally friendly, it’s still not a permanent solution, as there are still issues surrounding the production of the electricity used to charge the battery in the vehicle. Power plants still account for a major source of the pollution going into the environment as they burn coal to produce electricity, and also producing CO2 and carbon monoxide that goes into the air. The production of the batteries the provide power for the electric vehicles are also an issue, as they have to be mined produced in a big factory. The battery’s have a limited lifespan that after a while they are replaced …show more content…
Electric cars usually cost more up front then it’s same model counterpart, and tend to be heavier because of their enormous battery packs and electric motor. However, Maintenance is cheaper on an electric vehicle, with the exception of the power plant. Gas powered cars require for oil to be changed every 2,000 to 3,000 miles, and for parts to be regularly inspected and replaced if necessary. Resell value on gas powered cars tends to be lower than that of their electric counterpart which can be good and bad. Gas powered Vehicles with a low resell price tend to mean high miles, more problems, and even less reliable then a newer version. Electric vehicles tend to hold their value more because of less moving parts, the initial higher price, and the newer technologies associated with electric
