Globalization certainly has been a hot topic within the modern political climate as of late and has been a rallying cry of sorts. Politicians have been blasting globalization and offering alternatives which they promise must be taken to prevent widespread problems ranging from the depreciation of labor to culture wars. Such sentiments are particularly well seen through those of the local and rural communities who have experienced the supposed phenomena and feel left behind in the calamity. However, the objective student of history must ask is there any basis for such concerns as portrayed by those within places of power? One criticism that many have towards the loosening of immigration policies is that such liberal immigration will have a negative impact on culture since immigrants will not be able to assimilate to the predominant culture (Newman, Hartman, & Taber, 2012). However, as Newman et al. (2012) stated, such fear is not a new and unique phenomenon, but rather a continuation of nativism which held similar views towards immigrants. This is a key consideration beceause such fear regarding since such fears are often based upon the notion that modern immigration is different from the past when in actuality it is much closer than what is realized. Because of this, one should consider the believes that nativists hold regarding immigration. Nativists often hold the view that immigration is dangerous since immigrants will not accommodate to the new dominate culture and due to this, immigration should not be liberalized (Newman et al., 2012). However, as Newman et al. (2012) noted, such immigrants will culturally adapt to the socio-culture found to predominate in the area, which in effect hinders the nativist viewpoint. This results in the true threat of immigration towards culture is vastly overblown in actuality and results in unwarranted
