On September 11th, 2001 the United States and the world were shocked when terrorists hijacked four planes in order to carry out attacks on America striking the Twin Towers in New York, The Pentagon and the fourth plane was intended for the White House in Washington DC but the brave passengers crashed the plane in the fields of Pennsylvania. After the attacks were made, President Bush launched the War on Terror, which was to bring the men to justice who attacked America and to capture and kill many terrorist threats to America and the world. People debate many reasons concerning why Guantanamo Bay should be closed, but for the purposes of this paper, only a few will be addressed. One of the main reasons people argue that Gitmo should be shut down is due to the fact that detainees are being tortured for information. “There are recurrent reports of three contexts in which excessive force was routinely used: during transportation,72 with regard to operations by the “Initial Reaction Forces” (IRF), and by force-feeding during hunger strikes” (United Nations Economic and Social Council 26). These are not the only accounts of torture found in their study but also were found in some of the interrogation methods used at the base to obtain information. Some of the ways in which detainees are tortured are by waterboarding and even by the guards attacking or poking fun at the religion of the detainee. In his recent article “10 Years On, 10 Reasons Guantanamo Must Be Closed,” Parker talks about how the detainees do not get proper trials, quoting Congressman Jerrold Nadler, the Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Constitution, who stated that “Those whom we have good evidence against will get fair trials; those we have weak evidence against we’ll give less fair trials; those we have no evidence against, we’ll just keep them locked up in preventative detention without any trial at all”(2). With this said Parker later discovered that men who have not been charged with anything are still in Guantanamo Bay as detainees and so far see no near end of their stay there (1). John Bellinger states, “To refuse these men who have already been cleared by the task force or the courts is absolutely unconscionable” (5). People claim this is highly unfair and that Gitmo should be shut down immediately.
