Gun Laws and Limitations The Second Amendment to the United States constitution was ratified in the year seventeen ninety one and states that, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” It is commonly known as the right to bear arms. It means that all Americans have a right to own a firearm and have the right to use it. At the moment this amendment is a topic of controversy in both the media and in politics due to the increased number of mass shootings in the United States over the last few years. And in both the media and politics the argument against the second amendment is strong, but a majority of politicians in power at the moment do not think there is any problem with the gun laws. There a multiple different preventative measures that the US could take that might or might not be more effective than the ones we have now. However, some of the preventative measures that are already in place are necessary to stop mass gun violence. For example, no one person should be able to purchase a massive amount of guns and ammunition, and that area is covered by one of the limits already in place. There are many other preventative measures that we can put in place. (NRA) In countries like Sweden people have to pass a psychological test before they are allowed to get a licensed gun. This way prevents people who are prone to tempers and who have psychological problems from owning a gun. This solution would help because statistically it shows that most of the people who have committed mass shootings have gone into unbridled rages or done things that no normal or sane person would do. If we prevented those kinds of people from owning guns then we could potentially save lots for lives. Another preventative measure that should go hand in hand with the psychological test is a background test to make sure that people who want to purchase a gun have no previous history of crime or drugs so they don’t use guns under the influence or have the slightest chance of using the guns to commit a crime.
