Gun Control is one extremely prevalent topic in today’s society. It is so sad to see almost everyday news on recent mass shootings, school shootings, and multiple one on one shoot outs. Specifically in the United States, our population to gun ownership is the densest in the world, 22% of Americans have guns in their possession (“Should More”). One of the greatest parts of our country is all the freedoms we are granted, and the many checks and balances policies our government has in place to limit power. But with all the checks and balances within the government, what power is left for the people? This is where the second amendment comes into play. If that option is not available, next is to get cover and hide. If you cannot fulfill either of those objectives, students are taught to go after and assault the attacker. Those steps were obtained through my own personal experience of what my school taught me. Many people have said that “we cannot stop gun violence with more guns,” this is true to an extent, but with events such as school shootings, the majority of schools don’t have guns to oppose the offender. If there was to be an armed officer in each school, the assailant could be neutralized, limiting the amount of casualties and injuries of students and teachers within the school. Confronting an armed gunman with no fire power to back you up is extremely dangerous. The natural reaction for people who are caught in a shooting type situation is to find cover and hide. When people know they have a disadvantage, they will not go out and fight, especially when it comes to survival. Having armed guards increases the ability of law enforcement to protect the children and teachers. They might not do their job in some cases, such as the Florida shooting, but in others with people’s lives being saved, why would we limit our own protection due to few not upholding their duty? These guards still increase the chance of neutralizing the shooter and protecting the students and teachers. The 18 school shootings statistic is sickening, and begs the question: what can we do to lower this stat, or protect the students within the schools. The truth is, limiting the amount of guns or completely taking them off the market will not affect the motive of a school shooter. Gun laws and restrictions/regulations are already extremely rigorous. And people who have been previously convicted of a crime that has been sentenced to a minimum of ten years or longer has their second amendment right restricted.
