Gun control is not effective and does not reduce the number of gun-related crimes. Research proves Washington, D.C., New York, Illinois, California, and Chicago have some of the most restrictive firearm laws; yet, they still have some of the highest crime rates in the United States (Blanks 1). This is just one of the many examples as to why gun control would not work in the United States. Gun control refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms in order to control crime and reduce the harmful effects of violence. The government is trying to expand gun control, even though the United States has a Constitution and inside of the Constitution is the second amendment. The second amendment was created to protect gun ownership of all citizens and to allow them to Participate in the militia to keep the peace and defend the country if needed. Switzerland had only 24 gun homicides and 253 gun suicides. The United States, which has less strict gun control laws, ranked first in the world with 88.8 guns per 100 people and had 12,632 gun homicides and 17,352 suicides. A Harvard professor did research between homicides and gun availability from 26 countries in the early 1990’s and they found that when guns are most available, there are more homicides (“Should More Gun” 5). Research states that the victims of violent crimes were not able to even use a gun in self-defense. Actually in 2007- 2011, there was about 6 million nonfatal violent crimes in the United States and 99.2% of these crimes were not defended by a gun (“Should More Gun” 2). Therefore, a country with stricter gun control laws would have lower homicide and suicide rates.
