The second amendment and the input of gun control laws has been a big issue, especially when the number of mass murders and shootings are continuing to grow in the United States. Putting a limit or constraint on people who own guns will not stop the problem. Putting a limit may hold someone back for a short period of time, but somehow will still find one, purchase it, and use it. Some people just own a gun for the simple purpose of protection. Three major components of the second amendment will be affected if some type of gun control were to take place and those three components are concealed carry, weapons of mass destruction, and invasion of privacy.
Many states do not even require background checks for private sales. It seems that if a state requires background checks and considers mental illnesses, they have a higher “Gun Control Grade(Kirk).” In all, I believe that the use of guns need to be limited. Specifically in my community, guns do not seem to be a problem.
Gun control will make the people of the US weak because they will not be able to protect themselves when a dangerous man has gotten a gun illegally and wants to harm. “As columnist Thomas Sowell has noted: ‘The key fallacy of so called gun control laws is that such laws do not in fact control guns. They simply disarm law-abiding citizens, while people bent on violence find firearms readily available. Banning guns will not stop the crazed few who seek to open fire on the public’” (Hunter).
Alters, Sandra M. Gun Control: restricting rights or protecting people. Detroit: Gale Cengage Learning, 2011. Alters, Sandra book was extremely useful in writing my paper. She identifies what the right to bear arms actually means and provides clarity on laws, regulations and ordinances for firearms.
Amongst all the debate there are multiple reasons as to why people believe there’s no sense in adding more gun control laws. There are already laws that help prevent just anyone from getting a gun. Nathaniel
Another reason why gun control is barely talked about is because political people do not want to approach the topic, they could potentially lose supporters. If a political campaigner is for gun control some of their supporters could be against gun control and vice versa. It was not until 1992 when politicians openly showed they were for gun control. In the book "Shots in the Dark”, it stated that Bill Clinton was the first politician to be for gun control. Bill Clinton openly endorsed the death penalty as a result of gun control.
As long as guns have been around people have debated on whether guns should be legal or not. This debate has been floating around since the Second Amendment. The government can't get a grip on this debate to make a decision. One reasoning that guns should not be illegal is that guns are needed for protection at some points in time. People with permits are usually not the ones that commit the crime.
In the past, the major gun control legislations that have been put into effect have not stopped people from obtaining firearms (Gun Control.) There have also been cases in the past where cities have attempted to ban handguns. After the ban was put into effect, murder rates tended to rise instead of drop, unlike what most people might assume. Crime rates and violence also skyrocketed after the bans were put into effect. Another problem with taking guns away, or banning them, is that the government cannot expect everyone to abide by the laws.
Gun control endangers American’s constitutional right to bear arms. Politicians and civilians alike mistakenly think that revoking our constitutional right to keep and bear arms will ensure the end of gun violence in our country. Taking away our guns by criminalizing the purchase or ownership of guns will not keep weapons out of the hands of violent criminals. If we criminalize guns the violent gun-slinging criminals we worry about would continue to purchase them illegally through the black market. Marginalizing our right to bear arms endangers civilians due to the fact that those laws only affect law abiding citizens, rendering them defenseless.
Drugs are illegal, yet criminals still find their way to abuse drugs. Therefore, making guns illegal will not stop criminals from being able to get guns. Gun control laws infringe upon the right to self-defense and deny people a sense of safety. Stricter gun laws would make it more difficult for people to protect their homes and families. Gun control laws, like laws to try to ban assault rifles, go against the right to own guns for hunting and sport.
Gun control is an issue in many aspects; it is a rights issue regarding the second amendment, a safety issue, a political issue, and a racial issue. In 2017 alone, there have been 5,300 gun- related deaths in the US, not including an approximate 22,000 due to suicide. With a higher rate of public shootings and massacres occurring in recent years, this topic has been of high debate. By prohibiting the purchase of firearms by civilians, you violate the 2nd Amendment of the US constitution, protecting gun ownership. Additionally, criminals will be undeterred by gun control laws.
People are afraid that the government is trying to take away the ever sacred second amendment, and that without weapons, the ordinary man cannot protect himself. This, however, is not the case. Creating these laws would mean that criminals would be less able to commit gun related crimes, and those who abide by the law would still have proper protection. Even if criminals acquire weapons, people can still find protection in their weapons that they have. No matter what certain citizens view and believe, there are few critical downsides of gun control laws; on the contrary, the laws will provide more protection for the American people, and will ultimately show criminals that this country can stand up for
Gun control also limits our constitutionally derived right to own firearms. If gun control is enforced, law-abiding citizens will be forced to give up their guns and their right to own guns, while many criminals who own guns may illegally keep theirs. As the saying goes “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Guns are an important aspect of our society in many ways. They allow for protection, recreation, and hunting.
Guns are a cost-benefit ratio along with everything else in this world. Guns don’t fire by themselves, so why do we need to outlaw guns when the gun doesn’t pull its own trigger? Instead, we need to work with the people using them. Gun laws are to keep people that aren’t supposed to have guns from getting guns and they are also in place to protect the people who have guns and give them the right to bear arms. Studies show that gun ownership has increased incredibly while at the same time crime has decreased to historic lows The second amendment says people have the right to bear arms and they can’t be taken away.
"’Make no mistake -- they 're coming for our guns. And we freedom-loving gun lovers are totally defenseless! Other than, you know, the guns’ -Stephen Colbert” (Kurtzman 1). There are as many people who advocate for pro gun laws as the people who are opposed, which is the reason why gun control has become one of the most controversial topics as of right now. America is truly split between those who advocate for gun control and those who are opposed.
