When it comes to personal perceptions, there are certain issues that are predetermined, making the media’s reportings almost irrelevant due to the fact that there will be no bias change. Politics falls under this category. Gun control and the topic of gun violence is mainly a political issue, meaning the perceptions surrounding guns is often determined by outside factors. These factors include but are not limited to gender or age, socioeconomic class, race or religion, and education level. Consumers tend to seek out content that reaffirms their beliefs. It has been stated that once a belief has been formed, it is almost impossible to sway those beliefs. In a study done by University of Arizona professor Jan. E. Leighly and University of North Texas professor Tetsuya Matsubayashi, found that those with higher income had larger social webs and connections, in addition to individuals with a higher education level having a lower chance of policial variation or political shifts. This can be dangerous because it can create unnecessary policies to be enacted or ineffective laws and regulations (Pepin, 7). The media and news organizations were created with the intent to inform the public. There are many different types of media, including news articles, opinion articles, blogs, tv shows, and movies. Even celebrities seem to be taking a stand on political issues.
