Since the dawn of the United States, the right to bear arms has been one of the core beliefs of the American people. One of the dilemmas that has become more prevalent in the most recent years is gun control. The topic is divided between people either wanting increased gun control to restrict dangerous people from receiving guns, or wanting to withhold the second amendment from any restriction to it. Over the last twenty years, shootings have become more of a problem than any other time in American history. They believe that even though there are problems with gun violence in the country, it is one of the basic rights of a U.S. citizen to own a gun and that the Constitution protects that right. As said by President Trump over gun control, “The Constitution doesn’t create that right—it ensures that the government can’t take it away,” (www.infobaselearning.com). Even if the government puts more regulation, it wrongfully takes guns out of the law-abiding citizens“...Many of these citizens will follow [state laws] and disarm themselves, leaving them helpless against an armed criminal. If a person thinks criminals will voluntarily give up their weapons, that person is delusional,” (www.thetimesnews.com). Support to this claim can be used with a cartoon that shows a person telling a criminals that he can’t go into the area because it is a gun free zone, (www.bokbluster.com). Another argument is that severe punishments for mishandling a firearm is the best way to fix gun violence. Project Exile in Richmond is a great example of this, “Murders committed with guns in Richmond decreased by over 60% when Project Exile was in place—in the first two years of the program alone, 350 armed felons were taken off the street,” (www.infobaselearning.com). A cartoon depicts a before and after of a law-abiding citizen and a criminal. It shows that once firearms are made impossible to buy, criminals could only buy a gun from the black market and still do the same damage regardless of new laws put in place, (www.themainewire.com).
