She also writes some tales to inform readers that in the US, students are interested and enjoy in sports more than other peers in other countries. The Director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports,Daniel Gould in his Article, “Are High School Sports Good For Kids” suggests that high school sports are an integral part of American society. He supports this claim by first saying how sports have educational benefits, then talking about their effect on the child as a citizen, and finally claiming that sports give adolescents increased aspirations. Goulds purpose is to illustrate the benefits of children taking part in school sports. He adopts a analytical tone an older audience.
You find one prime example of this when looking into the University of North Carolina academic scandal. The university was more concerned about making sure the athletes were eligible to play and would be able to represent the school. In an Article about the case,U.S Justice Department Official, Kenneth Wainstein stated the “office administrator Deborah Crowder typically handed out assignments then high grades after only a scan of the work” (Ganim and Sayers). In the report done by CNN written by Sara Ganim and Devon Sayers, they discuss the University of North Carolina offering “paper classes” and how “advisers funneled athletes into the program to keep them eligible.” (Ganim and Sayers)
Throughout Gould’s article he includes data and research to prove a point that High School sports can be beneficial for the youth through increased educational aspirations and even increase social skills within adolescents. Even though most of the research has a positive outcome there is a chance of it having negative effects. In the third paragraph Gould continues on how the issue concerning winning in the sport participated can cause academic success to be forgotten about. Football is America’s favorite sport. American citizens spend their Sunday nights glued to the television, and Friday nights at the stadium watching athletes tackle, run and catch. In this community lately, there has been discussion lately on sports possibly being removed from the high schools. Although, they get the most recognition that does not mean that just because one little thing it gets removed and completely forgotten about. In fact, so many people do high school sports in the text “Are High School Sports Good For Kids” it explicitly states “Here in Michigan almost 300,000 young people take part in high school sports every year.” This scene particularly shows that many youth athletes participate in high school sports in only one state alone.
Many people believe that students that are involved in a high school sport affect their grade and test scores. At most high schools in America, sports are very popular and an important role in a student’s school years. High school sports have a positive impact on students and schools everywhere. Students have a better chance in succeeding in school while playing in a high school sport. First, high school sports are positive because it has great impact on both the student’s education and sports participation.
This notion is supported by Dr. Daniel Gould, who believes that “Children who participate in sports have increased educational aspirations, closer ties to school and increased occupational aspirations in youth” (1). People against the funding of high school sports think that parents and society are placing more emphasis than ever before and, “[P]ressures athletic personnel to deviate on winning from the athlete- centered educational and personal development mission” (Gould 1). However, athletes strive to do better in class. Michael Lorenc, a high school basketball coach believes that “those who seem to have an overwhelming schedule where they’re playing maybe multiple sports, and high academic schedules, they tend to do better than those who don’t do anything extracurricularly” (Gray). Balancing sports and school makes athletes put more effort into keeping up grades while playing the sport they love.

The next day at practice, her coach told her she was off the team--Even though Frances had been trying her best in Spanish. Frances thought this was unfair and ceased putting effort into Spanish. This is an example of how a child could be negatively by the No Pass, No Play rule.

While some parents believe that the competition can harm kids, I believe that sports can greatly help kids. Making them experience healthy competition and become more well rounded contributing members of society. The first reason that I believe supports my claim is that kids gain a sense of healthy competition that can prepare them for life. This can be seen in the article “Pros and Cons of Sports Competition at the High School Level” where Grace Chen, an education researcher, writer, and educator, states that sports and competition, “...help teens develop an array of personal skills, including resilience, attitude control, time management, and long term thinking abilities” (Chen 6).
