No bees, no honey, and the world is turning sour. Honey bees have the ability to tremendously change the world around us. In the past few years, the honey bee population has decreased an average of forty percent (Mosbergen, 2017, p. 6). Some people, however, do not believe that this is correct or relevant to humans. They believe that other methods of pollination could be substituted for bees or that it is not problematic for our world. Since bees are the main pollinators, nature would suffer greatly without them. Many plant populations would, in result, decrease as well. Just as canaries were used in coal mines so that the workers would know when the atmosphere was no longer safe, humans observe honey bees and their actions to see if they change to different environmental situations. Therefore, “when something is going wrong, it is right that we should use the significant, established knowledge base we have around honey bees to give us a head start in finding out what has been happening to cause honey bee deaths and colony collapses on such a major scale”(Carmen, 2017).
