Yes, I would allow my 15-year old child to know that he/she has the genetic marker for Huntington's Chorea. The reason for this being is that, "7,000 known single-gene disorders are dominant (always expressed)" (Berger 91). Since Huntington's Chorea is a dominant disorder, symptoms will always be noticeable. The pros to my child knowing earlier is to be well informed of the disease and be educated about how to lessen symptoms when and if they appear. Another pro of learning my child has the genetic marker for the disease is visiting genetic counselors when he/she are ready to have a family of their own. The role of genetic counselors are to, "help prospective parents understand their genetic risk so that they can make informed decisions" (Berger 93). …show more content…

According to the text, a person who inherits the gene for diabetes does not always onset the disease rather "lifestyle factors might activate that genetic risk" (Berger 80). In short, my child's environment and behaviors can be a switch to turn on or off the risk of onsetting Huntington's. A con to all of this would be the fear and anxiety of the future with this disease. According to the text, Huntington's is a, "severe dominant disorder(s) become common only when they are latent in childhood, manifest in adulthood" (Berger 91). The information of the unknown can affect my child's overall development by being ahead and on top of the potential risk of activated the disease and continue to live life and not be surprised when he/she becomes an adult.
