The waves push the boat in to the American port and freedom fills the noses of the people subjected to religious persecution, economic instability, political tyranny, social oppression, etc. Many of these people duck and hide from inspection centers and run to create a better life in the land of the free. Over the years of hiding and working vigorous hours at a facility where they are over-worked and under-payed, these people create a family. As they tend to their everyday lives, their world is suddenly torn apart when their door is broken down and everyone is snatched by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). To take a child away from its parent is to completely separate a family. To completely take apart a family, one must do so without compassion; without pity for that family’s suffering. The act of separating a family is just inhumane. K.I.F.T. stands for Keeping Immigrant Families Together. K.I.F.T. is a proposed program that helps immigrant families with permanent residency. K.I.F.T. will not only be for immigrant parents that have already been deported, but also for immigrant parents prior to deportation. Americans are the pot calling the kettle black when the word “foreigner” or “illegal alien” rolls off their tongues. We are all descendants of immigrants. Well, that is, except for Native Americans.
