The Pros And Cons Of Implementing Electric Vehicles

1166 Words5 Pages

Despite the numerous benefits to the environment, consumers, cities, and landfills that electric cars provide, many still resist the trend toward green vehicles. On the surface, these vehicles appear to be a shining light cutting through the gasoline cloud of today's industry, but digging slightly deeper reveals previously unseen flaws that need to be recognized and resolved before the electric vehicle becomes the new standard. Primary among these concerns is the question: from where do electric vehicles derive their energy? Unfortunately for electric car advocates, “An electric car with a lithium ion battery powered by electricity from an old coal power plant could emit more than 200g of carbon dioxide per km, compared with current average …show more content…

First and foremost: revision of the energy industry itself. In order for electric cars to live up to the label of “green,” not only do they have to limit emissions, but the sources from where they derive their energy must also limit emissions. This can be (and has been) accomplished in many ways, from wind turbines to solar energy to hydro-electric power to nuclear power plants. All of these sources, when developed, will help provide the infrastructure for electric vehicles to dominate the roadways. Improvement of renewable energy sources also provides a huge, underdeveloped industry with many employment opportunities as way to offset the decline in infrastructure that comes as a result of shifting society away from gasoline. Recent job outlooks place solar energy at a 24% incline since 2010, creating more and more jobs as the industry picks up speed (Chakravorty 2012). Other renewable energy industries are expected to experience similar growth. Additionally, coupling these power sources with the vehicle-to-grid power plants would allow renewable energy generated at non-optimal consumption times to be conserved until it is needed, as opposed to the current system of adjusting energy production to match
