During the eighteenth century in a time where colonization took place, indentured servants were brought during the Atlantic slave trade to the original thirteen colonies to work for a number of years until they could no longer work. This occurred during the 1700’s, now in 2016 the term indentured servants are used by student athletes on how they feel about the business of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The NCAA does not have to pay taxes because they are a nonprofit organization. Servants from Africa and modern day college athletes differentiate from each other, but the concept remained the same. College basketball and football has more exposure on television, radio, magazines, and merchandise than other college sport, therefore football and basketball players are well known to the public and the stars of those sports are in the national spotlight every day. Every year the NBA and NFL hold an even called the draft, the draft is when college basketball and football players declare to pursue a professional career in their sport. The NBA has two rounds and up to sixty players can be drafted from a pool of hundreds, whereas the NFL has seven rounds and up to 220 players can be drafted. Even though there are no shortage of players eligible to be professionals, only a select few are chosen. “College athletes rarely make it to the professional ranks: only 1.3 percent of college football players make it to the NFL, and only 1.7 percent of college basketball players make it to the NBA” (Kahn 214). The fact that less than two percent of student athletes make it to the professional ranks in basketball and football gives all the more reason to compensate student athletes who do not make it professional, even though a student athlete is drafted there is no guarantee their career will last for ten to fifteen years, the average career span for a professional in basketball or football is three to four years.
