Recommended: Orca captivity
In 2013, Gabriela Cowperthwaite released her documentary, Blackfish, to establish her argument as to why orcas should not be kept in captivity. Orcas have been kept in captivity at SeaWorld since the mid-60s and have shown aggressive behavior towards trainers. Throughout her documentary, Cowperthwaite creates ethos and pathos appeals through the use of interviews with former SeaWorld trainers as well as showing the change in behavior of Tilikum, an orca that has been kept in captivity since he was two. With the information provided by the interviews and the examples of Tilikum’s behavior, Cowperthwaite emphasizes why orcas should be released from captivity.
The first reason why I think should not be in captivity is of what happens in their tank. The first piece of evidence from the PETA practical “Aquariums and Marine Parks” is that since the tanks for the orcas are usually small for them, they get insane because of the echolocation they use. This makes me think that since their fin sometimes curves, that they would get injured while swimming. In addition, this might make the whale die faster than what they are supposed to live to. Other people might say it might non’t affect it
How would the watching world react if humans were kept imprisoned in tight, inhumane enclosures and forced to perform in front of hundreds of people each day? This is the tragic yet vividly-true reality of orca whales, one of many sea creatures set on display in aquariums worldwide. In 1961, the first orca was captured off California’s coast, and to this day, there are at least fifty-five still imprisoned in various marine parks across the globe. While it may be entertaining for the audience to witness these formidable whales flip and spin, this cruelty is only accepted because orcas are viewed as animals without feelings, entrapped for the enjoyment and amusement of the human race. If these orcas ever lash out at their human captors, the media
In conclusion Blackfish is gives audiences a shocking, aggressive and deeply compelling look into cruel practices of marine parks for decades that will change the way you look at captive/trained killer whales and other animals. In watching this documentary has significantly opened my eyes regarding the brutal treatment and methods of capturing wild animals giving me a greater sympathy for orcas in parks such as SeaWorld. This startling documentary will surprise audiences as Cowperthwaite is unrelenting in showing the fatal consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity while also critiquing of the cruel and immoral practises of
Andre Cole Ricardo Acosta G. English 101 September 22, 2015 Do Killer Whales Actually Belong in Captivity? Ever since wild animals such as Killer Whales have been captured and kept in theme parks and zoos as amusement, there have been issues on whether they should or shouldn’t be kept in captivity. Killer Whales, otherwise commonly referred to as Orcas, have regularly been taken away from the sea at a very young age so they can be trained, raised and kept in theme parks for exhibition. Although theme parks no longer capture whales from the wild, they are still bred in captivity for public display at marine parks such as Sea World (Gorman).
The target audience of this documentary is the general public that includes a big emphasis on the customers of SeaWorld. The filmmakers are trying to inform the public of the inhumane treatment and the conditions that the orcas face while at amusements parks such as SeaWorld. As described in the film, orcas are seen as intellectual animals that are aware of their surroundings. Because of their intellect, orcas don’t belong in a place SeaWorld and should be released.
Sea World Dilemma Though Sea World is using the orcas for entertainment, profit, and and education, their work is harmful to the orcas and trainers as shown in the informative film “Blackfish”. Orcas are large mammals who are not meant to be pets and should not be treated as so. The unnatural being of the confined spaces SeaWorld’s orcas are held in effect the natural being of the orcas. Such unnatural treatment can lead to negative effects on the orcas physical and emotional wellbeing.
“Blackfish” Animals and their trainers always became a major part of the performance, and marine creatures were not an exception. However, such “human-animal” collaboration often created both ethical and security issues. The documentary Blackfish demonstrates this combination and covers such topics as: is it dangerous to work with orca, and does these animals suffer because of their life in amusement parks? The answer is “yes” for both questions. The documentary also shows that administrations often covered up an information about the danger level of orcas (even from trainers) to continue to profit by them as actors or inseminators.
Orcas are very intelligent animals that have unfortunately been taken advantage of as a form of entertainment. Orcas were not meant to be held captive in a tank, they were meant to be in the ocean, which is so much bigger than a tank at SeaWorld. Some people who disagree with keeping the orcas captive may go and protest in person by boycotting and others might enter the park and try to sabotage the shows, but something that they can do to show that they don't agree would be to just simply not go to SeaWorld. People should not give their money to a park that has no sympathy or any morals for treating these animals with no respect, because if you do go into the park to show you disagree, it doesn't really make a difference because you are giving
Since then, SeaWorld no longer takes orcas from the sea, because they have enough whales at SeaWorld to birth their own. This just adds to the fact that SeaWorld is
Before I begin, I would like to let my viewers know that my credibility on the subject of captive orcas is not a professional one. I am merely someone who opposes the idea of captive orcas. I am also someone who has done some research and believes in the freedom and relocation of orcas to sea pens. For my persuasive project, I decided to create a piece of visual art to express my point. I want to show my audience, anyone on social media, the harsh life of an orca in places like Seaworld.
For this assignment I have chosen the "an exemption for whaling" as it is my very old concern about the cultural difference specially when i have faced to a documentary movie about whaling in Japan which shows a red sea from a whale blood and this documentary explained that in some areas this is the only way for a large group of people to survive, so suddenly this question popped up in my mind that which one has priority, a whale life or humans life quality. One the aspects which upset me most is that many people from developed countries which never experienced living in a undeveloped area or country have other priorities or at least concern than a person or family who straggles whit extreme poverty and hunger but during the globalization and some main streams they dictate their mind which is affected by medias and their life style. Do you agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on
Whaling: a cultural activity or ecological threat? Do you agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption? The International Whaling Commission banned whaling for commercial purposes in 1982 (White, 2016). Many countries who used to whale for centuries have continued whaling despite this international regulation.
An exemption for whaling 1. Do you agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption? I don’t personally agree with whaling because in my opinion this type of activity is very cruel for whales, besides, their reproduction cycle is slow and therefore it may lead this animal as an endangered species. However, part of the economic source of some villages of these countries depend on this activity, banning this activity may affect the income for those peoples that depend upon whaling as a livelihood.
Wildlife Conservation is often seen as a bad thing, but if you look at it from my perspective, then it is actually a good thing. People think of it as holding wild animals captive, but we are actually protecting them from poachers. The purpose of Wildlife Conservation is to protect the animals in danger, which I am in agreement 110%. Other people argue that we shouldn’t have conservations, but they don’t know the harm that can happen to unprotected animals.
