At 10:56 pm EDT on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon for the first time in human existence. He arrived on the Eagle spacecraft on President Kennedy’s mission to put a man on the moon (Dunbar July). The mission was named Apollo 11 and over 600 million people watched the moon landing, setting a new world record (Apollo). This was the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Dunbar NASA) first publicized event, making worldwide headlines and virtually ending the Cold War. NASA has had a large part of your safety, nationally and globally. NASA has recently created a new office called the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, the goal of this new office is to protect us from near earth objects. These objects are typically asteroids, meteorites, or comets and pass erely close to earth from time to time. In 2013 a meteorite exploded over the skies of Siberia and rained it’s ashes everywhere. While this caused no harm to anyone, there are many cases where an asteroid or meteorite could potentially be deadly to billions of people. These are the type of object that the Planetary Defense Coordination Office track and discover on a daily basis. This office is also responsible for relaying disaster plans to FEMA and hypothesising the impacts that an asteroid or meteorite would have on our planet. While at the moment we do not have the technology to prevent the asteroid or meteorite strikes this office is developing plans for asteroid capture or redirect missions it was ever needed (Basulto).
