Introduction National Health Insurance (NHI) is the topic of discussion because millions of Americans are without health care coverage. The uninsured are less likely to receive medical care, and are at risk of major debt or bankruptcy if a serious health crisis occurs. According to the Formosa Post (2017), NHI is a single payer entity that would take the responsibility for health care financing for all Americans; this means all Americans would be covered under one insurance company. People will get sicker because they’ll have to wait for care. With NHI, there have been reports of long wait times. However, most of those wait times are predominately associated with elective procedures (The Balance, 2018). For medically necessary procedures, wait times are sometimes caused by bureaucratic red tape. Not everyone will receive the tests or procedures ordered by their physician because all cases will be reviewed for legitimacy of need (Formosa Post, 2017). 3. We'll be assigned to doctors and hospitals and not be able to choose our own. “One of the basic tenets of universal health care is that patients should have easy access to health care and should be able to choose the health care provider they prefer. Unfortunately, there are limited numbers of insurers that are participating in the exchanges” (Campbell, 2016). For example, if a provider is no longer in a plans’ network, then the patient has two options: 1) stay with the current provider and pay out of pocket for services, or 2) change to a new provider who is in-network. 4.
