Parenting is one of the most fulfilling positions that any parent can hold. To share this position with someone that is equally invested can be a beautiful experience. Children that are born or are adopted into a two parent home are at a greater advantage, than those that have a single parent. With the legalization of Gay/Lesbian marriages, the romantic relationships of these groups of people, as well as the families they create, are considered non-traditional. Society’s views on non-traditional parenting can differ depending on the individual and the community. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 34.3 percent of lesbian couples and 22.3 percent of gay male couples were raising children. The data also found that same-sex couples raising children live in 96 percent of the counties in the United States. Many children in these families are the results of a at one time heterosexual relationship. The positive or negative effects of having a gay or lesbian parent can be difficult to measure because many of these children may be dealing with the separation of their parents. Research has shown that although separation can be complicated for the child, the outcomes for the child of parents of the same-sex are “no difference” than those in with heterosexual parents. Adoption for these couples can come in the way of artificial insemination, single parent or foster/adoption agency. Children that are adopted from a foster home are moved out of the child welfare system and into homes that are willing to love and nurture them. Gay adoption increases the chances of a child being placed into a more stable environment. Gay parents of the children whom have had some type of disadvantage can relate and help them cope with the experiences based on the biases and prejudices they have received. Gay parents are also more likely to adopt children with special needs and children that are at a difficult age to adopt
