The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Fusion

461 Words2 Pages

We all know that climate change is highly debated topic in politics all over the world and in America. Climate change is very real and it’s hard to understand how some people can argue with the overwhelming scientific evidence for it. Some politicians make it seem like there is no solution but, there indeed is. If America were to focus more on certain aspects of Science and Technology we could like many politicians want, be an example for the world to follow. Researching Nuclear Fusion would provide America and the world with a clean and inexhaustible energy source that would make America number one in innovation and technology and solve Climate Change. The purpose of nuclear energy is to harness atoms and alter them to produce energy. Some people will ask don’t we already have nuclear power plants why …show more content…

Well as of now all of our nuclear power plants are nuclear fission reactors. Nuclear fission is the splitting of atoms in half. Fission reactors run on uranium which is a highly radioactive substance. Nuclear fusion on the other hand does not give off any waste. Nuclear fusion is the exact opposite of fission. It’s what happens inside the sun. Instead of splitting atoms it merges or unifies the atoms creating a heavier one resulting in the release of ginormous amounts of energy greater than the energy given off by fission. Well why don’t we have nuclear fusion reactors well it’s because it’s not so simple. The fuel to produce fusion needs to be heated to an enormous temperature of somewhere near Fifty Million degrees. The pressure is very intense and must be kept stable long enough for the atoms to fuse. If held long enough for the atoms to fuse it will then achieve what scientists call ignition and become self-sustaining. Which means clean and
