Nuclear medicine is an imaging use to diagnose, treat, or check the severity of many different diseases, using small amounts of radiation. It pinpoints molecular activity, and can identify the disease in the earlier stages of its process. It observes some of the most sensitive parts of the body, by not hurting the organ. That is the reason it is harmless, but helpful. It does imaging on the heart, lungs, brain, bones, gallbladder, joints, etc. Nuclear medicine can be swallowed, inhaled, or injected into the human body, just depending on the type of radiotracer given. It has all been put together to create what is known as nuclear medicine. It was first recognized in 1946 by a man with the name, Seth Seidlin. It was reported that an ion treated a thyroid cancer patient. During the 1950’s, many scientists tried to figure out the diagnosis of this certain type of medical field. Benedict Cassen had developed the first rectilinear scanner during that same time period. In 1954, the Society of Nuclear Medicine was formed in Spokane, Washington. In 1971, it became an official medical specialty. The board of American Nuclear Medicine was formed, in 1972. One risk or danger that is usually a concern for most patients, is the radiation. However, it has been proven that the risk of health problems from the little radiation in the process, is outweighed by the benefit from the examination. However, the repetition of radiation is not a good thing for the body. Another danger includes, pregnant women or women who are breast feeding as it can complicate unborns, or cause health issues for newborns.
