The Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power Plants

555 Words3 Pages

I believe that Nuclear Power Plants are bad and should not be built. They ruin the environment. Nuclear energy has one of the lowest impacts on the environment of any energy source because it does not emit air pollution, isolates its waste from the environment and requires a relatively small amount of land. Nuclear energy stations do not emit criteria pollutants or greenhouse gases when they generate electricity. Nuclear energy stations do not emit criteria pollutants or greenhouse gases when they generate electricity. The life-cycle emissions from nuclear energy are comparable to other non-emitting sources of electricity like wind, solar and hydropower. The large-scale generation of electricity and the large-scale production of usable water are interdependent. Water use is one of …show more content…

If fossil fuels are used for mining and refining uranium ore, or if fossil fuels are used when constructing the nuclear power plant, then the emissions from burning those fuels could be associated with the electricity that nuclear power plants generate. The main environmental concern related to nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes such as uranium mill tailings, spent (used) reactor fuel, and other radioactive wastes. An uncontrolled nuclear reaction in a nuclear reactor can potentially result in widespread contamination of air and water. The risk of this happening at nuclear power plants in the United States is considered to be small because of the diverse and redundant barriers and many safety systems in place at nuclear power plants, the training and skills of the reactor operators, testing and maintenance activities, and the regulatory requirements and oversight of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Environmental and health consequences of electricity generation are important issues, alongside the affordability of the power which is
