Nuclear power is when you use a nuclear reaction to create nuclear energy to generate heat. That heat is then use to create steam the steam spins a turbine to generate and harness the energy. The reaction happens very fast and can be hard to control if not properly prepared. I will talk about the many pros and cons of nuclear power and what happens when one melts down. The origin of nuclear power was in 1934. Physicist Enrico Fermi discovered the potential off nuclear fission when he added neutrons to uranium atoms. The products of the reaction were much lighter than before and that surprised him. Ever sense his discovery scientist have been improving and trying to improve their ways of control and creating nuclear power. Nuclear power is harnessed by causing a series of small nuclear reactions. Those small reactions produce an extreme amount of heat. That heat is then used to boil water to …show more content…

Chernobyl was a fine example of a meltdown. Chernobyl’s power plant was poorly build and had many flaws. Due to human error and machinery the power plant when into critical state, in which causing it to explode. Millions of miles of farm land and city had to be completely evacuated due to the radiation. The people of Chernobyl will not be able to live there again for 20 thousand years. It on average takes 20 thousand years for an area that is radiated to become no longer radiated. You are able to return to Chernobyl as long as you are not there very long. You still are not able to get anywhere near the reactor due to it being the source of the radiation. There is a fifty/fifty chance that a Chernobyl size event will happen again. They are expecting event like 3 mile island to happen within the next 10 years. 3 mile island was able to stop the meltdown before it could become a Chernobyl size
