When nurse staffing is inadequate, the ability to practice ethically declines. Unmanageable workloads, an increase in acutely ill patients, and nurse fatigue can cause abandonment of this virtue. Based on data from California’s Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act results, the effect of increased nurses to patients has shown to have a marked change in patient outcomes. When statistics and studies show that lower registered nurse -to -patient ratios are shown to reduce mortality rate by more than 50%, the question arises why aren’t organizations addressing this phenomena . If changes similar to those outlined in the California act are followed, these results can be replicated nationwide and allow nurses to work in a patient safe environment where they are not pressured to find shortcuts to accommodate unmanageable workloads. Results being less hospital acquired infections, pressure ulcers, and patient falls.

Categories of burnout sources with corresponding interventions for each were amount of work to complete in a day; frequency of surprising, unexpected events, participation in decisions that affect work; quality of leadership from upper management, recognition for achievements; opportunities for bonuses or raise, management’s dedication to giving everyone equal consideration; clear and open procedures for allocating rewards and promotions.
