Offshore oil drilling needs to be illegal in countries around the world to decrease the amount of man to man conflict. Countries compete to gain full control over the profuse amount of resources produced by oil drilling and it causes rilvery between countries. Elizabeth Nyman, a political scientist at Lafayette, looked at data of conflicts throughout many years and in 1947 came to the conclusion that most disputes happen due to advances in oil drilling technology (Nyman). Oil is extremely hard to extract and when the technology improves, it is easier to reach the oil from the depths of the ocean. Released from the PR Newswire, a press release distribution company, in 2004 to 2007, Belize's Supreme Court demanded offshore drilling contracts for their oceans in attempt to preserve it. During the first court case the ruling was overturned, which shocked Belize because countries that do not do anything have a contract to preserve their oceans, but without Belize the oil drilling companies would not have half of their products and technologies. After the eleven-year process of collecting more than 20,000 signatures, Belize was granted a contract to preserve their oceans and become completely offshore oil drilling free (PR Newswire). This one court case took eleven years to resolve, which was way more than necessary. Belize wanted to save the oceans in an attempt to make their country safer and cleaner, but the courts had to make getting the contract more difficult for Belize, so the Government would not lose their own business.
