My topic of discussion in this particular essay is going to be powerlifting. Is it a real sport and the positives/negatives of powerlifting in my opinion. I’ve been told and have heard in discussion numerous times that powerlifting is not a real sport. I am going to give my opinion on the matter because I do think it is very much a real sport. Powerlifting is very competitive as any sport is and even though the lifts are individualized it is a team effort and can not been done alone. Anyone can be a powerlifter or perform the lifts however anyone can shoot a basketball, throw football , or hit a baseball etc but to do it successfully you need to train for the specific movement. Powerlifting movements like the snatch and the clean and jerk are performed in the Olympics to where a lot of normal activities/sports are not. Lifting weights is a healthy lifestyle in moderation but the amount of weight that is required to become competitive is not healthy on your bones and joints. Lifting extremely heavy weights you are more prone to injury short term and long term even if performed in the safest manner. The chance of injury is always there, you only try to reduce the likely hood of it happening. The human body isn’t made to perform a lot of the activities that are performed in sports. A lot of people say for powerlifting to be a sport/hobby where there is no physically contact and for it to the damage it does to your body is crazy. Golfers/tennis players suffer carpal tunnel/tendonitis in the elbow and or knee, marathon runners have joint pain from the constant vibration that running causes and even artist suffer from carpal tunnel form drawing or painting for long periods. We all know the cons but we do it anyway because it’s part of the game. There will always be a reward to risk ratio in everything.
