Since the 1950’s powerlifting has increased throughout the United States; men and women have idolized Powerlifters such as Arnold Schwarzenegger. Powerlifting is very beneficial and comes with a heavy cost if done incorrectly.Nearly a million Americans wound up in the emergency room due to powerlifting between 1990-2007 (Bakalar). Within these 18 years there have been approximately 114 deaths due to powerlifting (Bakalar). While there are pros and cons to powerlifting, powerlifting is very beneficial if it is done correctly and certain precautions are taken for safety. Powerlifting is very beneficial, but at the same time your injury rate increases a lot. Powerlifting, a strength sport allows you to build muscle and burn fat (Marrone). It strengthens your bones, and you’re less likely to injure yourself in sports and other activities. Specifically, powerlifting strengthens your leg muscles, back and upper body. There are several different workouts you can do while powerlifting such as, squatting, deadlifting, and bench pressing to help you get stronger and healthier.
