RFID Chip Implants In recent years the substantial increase in RFID technology has dramatically sparked controversial debates, and many claim that this technology oversteps several ethical and moral boundaries. RFID stands for “Radio Frequency Identification”(Foster, Jager 1). Humans have begun to be tagged with these RFID chips and many people are demonstrating a strong opposing opinion on the medical risk and the ethical concern of this new technology. Although this technology presents many negative consequences there are also several positive opinions of this new advanced technology. After “ “Three market square” released their plans to implant chips in their employees they were met with a great deal of criticism from the public. A BBC story claimed that all employees that have volunteered has signed up to become a “half human, half walking credit card (Marlaire). Comments on the “Three Square Markets Facebook page included ‘Absolutely deplorable,’ ‘BOOOOOOOOO’ and ‘disgusting’” (Marlaire). Many people fear this technology and claim that it is going to far in the development of science and technology. This topic also brings up major concerns for religious groups that claim that the RFID chips is the Mark of the beast. The Mark of the Beast is mentioned in the Bibles book of revelations; the mark of the beast is supposed to be a mark received on your right hand. Without this mark no one is able to buy or sell. Although we are not to this point yet many people argue that this is the direction in which we are going; many predict that our banking information will soon be included on this chip there for many christians claim that the bible is fulfilling its prophecy. This subject also brings up the question of privacy concerns. Many “Activists’ websites have much discussion about possible harms from implanted RFIDs ranging from tracking of individuals to mind control”(Foster and Jaeger). One major point in which this can be related to Frankenstein is the fear of the unknown. In “Frankenstein” even though the creature has great desires and attitudes towards society no one takes his circumstance into perspective. This is very similar to the RFID chip implants because when many people hear the words “chip implant” they automatically jump to conclusions and assume that bad things are to come. Most of society is not even willing to consider the RFID chips and inquire on what they are actually used for but one day maybe the society as a whole will become accustomed to this new technology. This is similar to the novel because no one ever accepts the creature and tries to understand him for who he truly is. When Victor Frankenstein's creation first introduces himself to a blind man named Mr.Delacey, for a short moment in his life he is listened to and accepted. The man isn't afraid because the only thing he recognizes his his native language in which the creature knew very well. As soon as the man's children return they beat him, run away, and faint due to the horrific characteristics of his appearance (Shelley 120).
