The Pros And Cons Of Raising Minimum Wage

The topic of minimum wage is one that can lead to heated debates from both sides of the aisle over how much a person should be getting in payment versus how much work they do, or how hard they work to earn the payment. Countless people today are not getting paid the amount they should be based off of the work that they are putting in to their job. There are arguments leaning towards the raising of minimum wage, and there are arguments leaning against the raising of the minimum wage, however one of the arguments I find persuasive. There are some arguments that lean towards the raising of the minimum wage. The first argument presented involves job creation in the United States. A recent study involving three hundred fifty thousand small businesses and the IRS proved that by raising the minimum wage, proved that by raising the minimum wage in cities, actually created jobs (Meyerson A.19). The survey showed that the cities with a higher minimum wage had more jobs come to the area, aiding in job growth (Meyerson A.19). Another argument that leans toward the raising of the minimum wage involves people in poverty. Studies have shown that by raising the minimum wage, more people can live above the poverty line (Meyerson A.19). Some people who are against the raising of minimum wage suggest that there is no concrete evidence that supports the claim that higher minimum wage will help those who live in poverty. Low income families and low wage workers are actually different (Neumark A.11). By raising the minimum wage, benefits that families would usually get goes significantly down (Neumark A.11).
