Dear George Miller, I am writing to you because I would like for you to amend H.R. 1010- Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013-2014. I firmly believe that the increasing of the standard minimum wage throughout our country will not help us, but only hurt us. With this Act, minimum wage will increase every year if this was to be passed by Congress. Everyone complains about minimum wage being too low, but has anybody really thought about what would happen if the minimum wage was raised? Has anyone thought about the possible effect that it might have on workers or even business owners? That is a great question to be asked when thinking about whether it should be raised or not. Many factors need to be taken into consideration when thinking about raising the minimum wage. Shumlin and Malloy (2014) believe that raising the minimum wage makes good economic sense. But how can raising the minimum wage and causing people to lose their jobs be good for the economy? A former director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Holtz- Eakin, believes that there shouldn’t even be a minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage will put people who do not have the best qualities, people who did not further their education the best they could, out of a job. Only the best are going to be hired with having to pay each employee more money (Weiner, 2014). Even though there are people out there who are not as educated as others, it is not fair that they cannot get a job because of that. Just because someone is more educated than another person, does not mean that they are a better worker. Being a great worker and learning the position that they are suppose to learn, will also help educate them and in the end, it is a win-win.
